My career journey has a familiar pattern, switching back and forth from being a research doer to user for 25 years. I started my career in Nielsen in the mid-90s after graduating from the University of the Philippines. The training was intense from the start, but I learned the fundamentals of ad testing, brand tracking, concept test, UAI and at the same time how to do qualitative studies. Looking back, I now see the value of getting early exposure to a variety of projects and learning to do both quantitative and qualitative studies. But I felt that my research career is just beginning and my training is not complete until I learned how to be a research user. I switched to a client role and joined SC Johnson, truly a family company. I have learned not just being a research user but marketing and brand management as well. I will forever love ‘my' brands: Ziploc, Pledge, Mr. Muscle to name a few. I later joined a research agency called PSRC (Philippines Survey & Research Company), an affiliate of the now defunct Research International then jumped back to client side to join the biggest quick service restaurant in the Philippines – Jollibee Foods Corporation. It was an exciting time with the brand expanding globally and acquiring new brands. It was a great research team too, and we eventually became Bright Research Consulting. That was my shortest job stint as I had to leave the Philippines and migrate to Auckland, New Zealand in 2017 with my family. No regrets as my three young daughters, husband and I are happily settled just outside of Auckland. I'm now happily stuck in New Zealand working for Skills Consulting Group for the past 3 years. New country, new industry but the same consumer insights work that I love.
